It is journalists who record world history for future generations. It is impossible to dispute this statement in today’s context, when the territory of Ukraine and its peaceful citizens are attacked almost daily by drones, bombs, and soldiers of the Russian Federation’s invading army. It is precisely these heroic Ukrainian journalists who are the first and most objective witnesses to the brutal crimes committed by the aggressor state on the territory of sovereign and independent Ukraine.
The self-sacrifice, patriotism, resilience, and courage of Ukrainian journalists - who fearlessly report the truth to the world despite all obstacles - will undoubtedly go down in history.
That is why Ukrainian pianist Artur Nikulin has launched a fundraiser for Ukrainian journalists, saying: "I was inspired by the film 'The Eastern Front' (Ukrainian: "Час підльоту"), to whose Latvian premiere at the "ArtDocFest" festival the director recently invited me personally. I thought to myself—yes, our world has a vast amount of information about what is happening in Ukraine. But we don’t know how the very people who provide us with this information live—the people on the other side of the screen! Since I have long-standing ties with the Ukrainian press community, I decided—why not help them specifically, these outstanding people who are available 24/7 and are forced to constantly risk their lives in the name of truth? We have witnessed so many tragedies among journalists that it is simply impossible to look away without shedding tears. That is why I would like the funds we raise during my concert to go directly toward the needs of Ukrainian journalists."
A charity concert in support of Ukrainian journalists will take place on April 18 at the Riga Anglican Church. The concert will feature compositions by one of the symbols of modern Ukraine - the outstanding Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov.
Donations will be used to support Ukrainian journalists by providing them with the equipment and resources they need to continue their work safely and effectively in wartime conditions.
