What if one morning we woke up and couldn’t speak? We would be like newly born babies, unable to say what we want or what hurts. What would it be like if you never heard your child say, “Mommy, I love you! Daddy, I love you!”?
Language is the main means of human communication. Through language we think and obtain information, read books, watch films, and listen to the radio. With language we express emotions.
If a child does not speak due to congenital or acquired illnesses, it is the parents whose hearts hurt the most. Although over time parents learn to understand their child even without words, others do not. A child who does not speak is most often not accepted into kindergarten or school. Such children have almost no friends; they cannot attend clubs or other leisure activities unless their parents are present, acting as the child’s voice. Even when visiting a doctor or being in hospital, the child cannot say what hurts or how they feel.
Children who can speak but whose speech is impaired suffer greatly because of it. They pronounce sounds incorrectly, confuse sounds, or are unable to articulate them properly. Peers often do not understand or accept them, and at school they face learning difficulties.
The inability to speak or speech disorders can have various causes—autism spectrum disorders, trauma, congenital CNS anomalies, cerebral palsy, stroke, and others. These children need help.
An audiologist–speech therapist is a specialist who provides diagnosis and intervention for communication abilities, speech and language, phonation, and swallowing disorders.
So that families do not have to worry about being unable to afford audiologist–speech therapist services, a charity program is in place. The cost of one session is 45 euros. Within the program, it is planned to support at least 100 children, with a total of more than 1,000 sessions.
