Julia is 47 years old. She lives in Ādaži and is living with a diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) — a severe, progressive neurological disease that completely restricts movement. Despite her diagnosis, Julia is a positive and open person with an active outlook on life. She has obtained an education, has additionally studied linguistics, speaks English, and is interested in psychology. She highly values sincerity, openness, and optimism in people.
Julia lives alone. Her parents have passed away, and her only sister lives abroad; she also has a disability and is therefore unable to provide assistance. Julia is fully dependent on daily support from others. In her everyday life, Julia needs a caregiver who is constantly present and helps with all daily activities. Julia is unable to sit independently, transfer to a wheelchair, move around, turn over in bed, or take care of herself — she cannot eat or wash herself without assistance. The level of support determined by the social services is insufficient for Julia’s needs, and she is also unable to receive it because her income exceeds the assistance limit set by the municipality.
The gross salary for an 8-hour working day before taxes is 85 euros per day, which amounts to 1,870 euros per month and 22,440 euros per year. Julia does not have such financial means and therefore asks for help from others. In order for Julia to live a dignified life and receive the necessary care every day, urgent funds are needed to ensure her care.
