The war in Ukraine is one of the most devastating tragedies of our time. While much of the country’s resources are understandably focused on defense and the recovery of wounded soldiers, support for socially vulnerable groups often remains limited. Families caring for children or adults with disabilities frequently receive little assistance beyond basic humanitarian aid such as food and clothing.
For families with loved ones who have special needs, daily life has become especially difficult. Public transportation is often inaccessible, evacuation can be challenging, and rehabilitation services are limited or unavailable. Frequent Russian missile and drone attacks create a constant threat to life and well-being. Many people spend their nights in bomb shelters, basements, or metro stations. Others have no access to shelter and remain at home, hoping that the next attack will not strike them.
After more than four years of living under constant stress and uncertainty, many parents are exhausted. Most fathers are serving on the front lines, leaving mothers to care for their children alone while also trying to earn a living. Before the full-scale invasion, approximately 130 children and adults with disabilities attended the Kyiv day center “Sonyachnyi Promin.” Today, fewer than 15 attend regularly, as many families are unable to access services due to safety concerns and daily challenges.
We, a group of Latvian patriots and social service professionals, want to use our knowledge, experience, and resources to support this vulnerable community.
With donated funds, the association “Ogres Novada Attīstībai” will provide Ukrainian families who have a family member with a disability the opportunity to spend a period of respite in Latvia. The project will provide:
* Safe transportation from Ukraine to Latvia and back
* Accommodation in Latvia
* Social and emotional support
* Assistance with rehabilitation and integration activities
* Additional support, if needed, to help families remain safely in Latvia until the end of the war
The goal is to offer these families a chance to rest, recover, and regain strength in a safe and peaceful environment.
