It was nineteen years ago when the first enthusiasts in Riga started rescuing abandoned house pets – cats and dogs. Later on they were able to develop a modest plot of land, housing 14 dog kennels into the very first shelter in Riga – Jugla Shelter. Alongside the daily challenges of rescuing and taking care of animals, enthusiasts worked towards a major goal – the goal of building a modern, functional new shelter, able to meet all animal welfare criteria. Now, thanks to the kindness and generosity of our sponsors and the public, this dream has been fulfilled. In 2012, shelter "Labas Majas" (The Good Home) opened its doors to over 60 dogs and 60 cats.
One goal is met, and the work continues. Unlike government funded shelters, which receive financial aid covering at least the first 14 days of an animal’s stay, "Labas Majas" must fund 70% of all rescues from day one. However, Labas Majas has no funds of its own, there is only the support of the public – donations which, over the course of eighteen years, have enabled us to save more than nine thousand animals in need.
We can only help our four-legged friends - be they lost, abandoned, hit by a car, left tied to a tree, stuffed in a bag for drowning or discarded on the side of the street – with your support.
Every bit of food in the tummies of healthy, sick and starved animals, every drop of water needed to fill their bowls and clean their kennels can only be afforded with your support.
Every broken leg, aching stomach, cut and bruise caused by abuse – health issues of varying severity, including vaccines, deworming and neutering, can only be addressed with your support.

The annual cost of running the shelter is 14 480.00 EUR:
- 4800.00 EUR in animal food,
- 8480.00 EUR in utilities (heat, electricity and cleaning supplies),
- 1200.00 EUR to cover veterinary expenses.
