“I am a 36-year-old woman and a mother of three children aged 4, 6, and 9. They are my greatest joy, my strength, and my reason not to give up even in the most difficult moments. I am supported by a loving family and a husband who takes care of our home and children when, due to my illness, I have less strength myself.
In 2023, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Further examinations revealed a BRCA1 gene mutation—an inherited genetic change that significantly increases the risk of cancer. At that time, the disease was successfully treated. Unfortunately, during a routine follow-up two years later, I learned that the cancer had returned,” says Dace from the Jelgava region.
At present, a medical council has prescribed a therapy with a medication that is included in the reimbursed medicines list, but not in Dace’s specific case. Individual reimbursement for the medication has also been denied, despite the council’s clinical justification for its necessity. The cost of the medication is EUR 3,912 every three weeks, amounting to EUR 70,416 for a full year of treatment. These costs are far beyond the family’s financial means, which is why they are seeking the support of others.
“In my daily work, I contribute to ensuring public safety. Now, I need safety myself—the safety to live, to be present for my children, to be a wife, a friend, and a colleague. Asking for help is not easy; it is much easier to give. Yet at this moment, my hope of continuing the fight for my life depends on people’s compassion and support,” Dace says.
