“ Animals do have something to say. They may not have a voice nor a language that we humans can or even wish to learn. Nonetheless they have lots to say - not just about themselves , but about the world, about how living creatures interact with one another and finally - about us.”
Kristine Cilvere – founder of the Animal Friend Trust.
Since the project ‘Once a human had a friend’ was set up in April 2004 it has provided food , medicines and shelter for man’s smaller friends who have fallen on hard times. Some are common everyday pets , others more exotic animals , but all have lost an owner and ended up in an animal shelter. Others are strays who have suffered or are in need of urgent help.
This project’s inception is the work of “The animal friend trust” and “The animal friend” shelter. Both of these rely entirely on private help and private donations . The “Animal Friend” shelter cares for approximately 80 cats on a daily basis , and an average of 30 animals receive veterinary help at the “Animal Friend” vets clinic. Around a hundred stray cats per month are sterilized . Over the 15 years since it was established approximately 13,000 animals – dogs , cats , hamsters, rabbits , pet rats , pet skunks , budgerigars , tortoises and even a pygmy pig , have been rehomed. These are all happy endings!
Your donations to this project will help to:
- purchase cat , dog , puppy / kitten and any specialist type food
- provide vaccines , medication as well as veterinary support . Often the animals which have been taken in are so weak that they require special assistance - injuries need medical attention or even

- inform the public at large and publicise the search for caring and kind new owners for those homed at the
- develop an educational programme focussing on the welfare and protection of animals , especially for children and young people , thus helping to promote the understanding of animal characteristics / behaviour and encourage responsible attitudes towards
