Illness tends to be sudden and unexpected and turns our lives upside down. When ill, we are vulnerable and need support and care. Illness presents us with many questions and very few answers. What to do? Will I ever get well? Will I be able to keep my job? How to tell the loved ones? What will happen to my children if I die? All of a sudden your life is taken over by hospitals, doctor appointments, analysis, pharmacies and medications.
Sadly diagnosis of a critical, rare or long-lasting illness often goes hand in hand with financial challenges to the family. Elective surgery in Latvia is usually not covered and unfortunately even acute pain is rarely enough of a reason to get surgery funded by the healthcare system. When self-funding the surgery is not an option, the choice is between excruciating pain and the side-effects of very strong pain-killers. Also it appears there are the 'wrong' kind of illnesses that don't merit subsidised medication or in some cases event respectful attitude from the healthcare workers.
Equally there are tens of thousands of people who've been diagnosed with a long lasting critical illness at a very young age - cerebral palsy that affects one's movements, mental illnesses that prevent one from being employed and more importantly integrating into the society, and a variety of genetic and malignant illnesses and injuries that require long term treatment and rehabilitation. While they need to learn to accept their health condition, they equally deserve a happy and fulfilled live. Instead, more than ten thousand people in Latvia every year are unable to fund their treatment and rehabilitation and start claiming health benefits as they have to stop working.
In many cases, lives and movements of these individuals are so restricted that even a trip to the store for bread or a visit to the restrooms without the help of someone is as impossible as a trip to the moon for the most of us.
