There is a hope in the hearts of many young children that one day they will be like others – they will meet new friends, will play with them, secretly do a little mischief and make their parents happy with good deeds.
Unfortunately, there are children for whom this is only a hope. They have been affected by a disease that denies them the joys of movement. They have a cerebral palsy, often combined with epilepsy, or some other rare inherited disease or acquired trauma, the consequences of which will affect them for the rest of their lives.
There are rehabilitation programmes that help these children. Some are available in rehabilitation centres in Latvia, e.g., in Vaivari, Ligatne and Baltezers, and there are some specialised centres outside Latvia. Latvian Government funds afford one visit a year to a rehabilitation centre, however, that is not sufficient.
Parents continuously look for new ways to help their children. The treatments are often expensive and not covered by state support. However, the results of such treatments are very encouraging and help child development enormously. Families invest all their efforts and finances to help their children. Nevertheless, on their own, without the help of others, they cannot achieve it.
Regular rehabilitation and treatment is essential to improving the health and quality of life for those children.
