Latvians are regarded as a singing nation because there is a unique amateur choir movement in our country that culminates every five years – the Song Festival – when 12 000 singers gather to perform simple and complex Latvian vocal treasures. This is a national celebration! But there are many people for whom the Song Festival is hard work – the work of life. The conductors of amateur choirs have always been the main and most reliable driving force of the festival.
Unfortunately, a choir conductor is one of the lowest paid professions in Latvia. During the concert, there are flowers and praises, but practical support is minimal… To be able to support a family, the majority of Latvian choir conductors simultaneously manage several choirs and are additionally employed elsewhere. However, when it is time to retire, when all the concerts are over, these people, who have selflessly given all their energy to their choirs and their nation, are no longer needed. We have forgotten the retired choir conductors.
Choir conductors are not the only pensioners who are forgotten. But there are not many of them who represent a profession thanks to which the slogan: “Latvia – the land that sings!” has formed. These retired choir conductors are the ones who have worked for Latvia to have great events to be proud of.
The association of Latvian Choir Conductors has created the Foundation for Retired Choir Conductors, which will provide support to the oldest of its members. There are already many choir conductors who must be immediately included in the social support programme and who require health treatment services.
Therefore, in cooperation with the Swedbank Programme for Seniors, the Association of the Latvian Choir Conductors will organise a joint concert on 22 February, 2009, “Let’s Help through Song!” in at least 120 cities around Latvia. Thousands of singers will take part in this event. In this concert, donations will be collected for supporting retired choir conductors.
However, to provide support to all those who need it, broader public support is necessary.
We invite you to support the retired choir conductors as well!
