Those affected by a critical illness or an injury from a young age don't ever stop dreaming about being able to accept one's illness and to improve the health condition. Many of the critically ill youth have been diagnosed with cerebral palsy which will affect the rest of their lives - it affects movement and requires on-going exercising and other rehabilitation. Treatment is required to stop further deterioration and prevent impairments that may lead to deformation and chronic pain. Not completing regular rehab can result in needing expensive surgery and even more rehab. If the illness has affected mental health, there are developmental and physical exercises that can help stimulate brain activity.
Coming of age can often lead to a state of shock for the family of the critically ill - the expectation is that despite the illness, the child grows into an independent adult, however, in reality it is not possible. It's not uncommon that those affected by a critical illness, retain the mental and physical abilities of a child even well after their 18th birthday. Their parents need to sort out the formalities associated with acting on behalf of their grown up child while making sure they can pay for the required healthcare that gets more expensive as is less subsidised for adults than it is for children. While expenses are going up, there is no additional income for the family. Often one of the parents has to stay at home to look after their critically ill child or has already retied with a minimal state pension - these are the families that are in need of support the most.
Support is required to pay for rehabilitation and treatment in Latvia as well as abroad that isn't funded health care plans.
Let's help the critically ill youth to recover!
