In today's hectic and material society elderly people often become invisible citizens. Old and forgotten people reside in both – quiet countryside and noisy cities. A large proportion of these people are lonely and believe that their duty is to pass away as quickly and quietly as possible. Many do not dare to bother others with their worries and modesty is their daily motto.
Modest pensions of Latvia’s elderly often leads them being in an unenviable situation where they need to seek help. Many have families and children, who can help but often the children themselves are unable to provide the necessary support due to their own serious illness or desperate circumstances. In the most difficult situation are those elderly people who are alone, neither have children nor relatives who can help. Sometimes their relatives are not willing to help even if they do exist.
Many elderly people have experienced war and post-war hardship and now they find humiliating to ask for help when it comes to purchase of firewood or medication. Difficult situations arise when elderly are awaiting much needed operations, especially when the state paid hospital waiting queues are too lengthy. Spending every day in pain is proving too much for such elderly people who are unable to take care of themselves. Occasionally their home that has not been renovated in decades will desperately need new windows, however the elderly will not be able to do it themselves. In such circumstances, we really need your support and care that we all together can provide!
