Volunteer work is donating your time, knowledge and skills to charity, without receiving any salary. Volunteer work can be done in hospitals, public organisations, environment collective work and other socially important fields.
A philanthropy or charity is the targeted and planned donation of funds or other resources to public benefit goals, most often to organisations, without expecting any reward. Philanthropy supports a wide range of social needs, for example education, health protection, art and culture, research, scholarship programmes, etc. Quite often, charity is provided spontaneously, without special planning, out of compassion and to somebody who really needs it, but planned and purposefully directed charity can provide greater benefits to society.
Community philanthropy is a type of philanthropy that defines membership to a concrete environment or territory. Recognising his or her membership to a concrete community or environment – district, city, parish, micro-region or block, the contributor supports its development by his or her donation in the form of money, time, skills or other resources. Donations can be made to your former school, to install a children’s playground or to plant trees near your residence.
Community philanthropy is implemented in an organised and planned manner by community development organisations – community foundations.
A community foundation is an independent philanthropy organisation that operates in a specific geographic area, for example, in a city or region, to form permanent savings funds from the contributors assets, to issue grants, provide services to the contributors and to take the initiative in the local society to assist in problem solving for the citizens of its territory and to improving their quality of life. A community foundation not only deals with fundraising, but is also an active promoter of social changes. Such an example in Latvia is Talsi Region Community Foundation, which unites not only the local residents, but also people connected to the city of Talsi who are not its permanent residents.
A community or local society covers all age, ethnic, religious and social groups of citizens, who inhabit/are connected to a specific geographic area – a region, city or parish.
Corporative public responsibility is a good business practice that demonstrates the company values and principles and shows that the company has voluntarily included social, environmental and human rights in its everyday activities and in relation to the parties involved in company activities – employees, clients, partners, local society and others. Public responsibility also includes investing in the development of the local society, which is also reflected in the company’s corporate philanthropy strategy.
Patronship is financial and material support to art, science and different cultural events.

A private foundation is a foundation established by an individual to support charitable goals, investing his or her private funds. A private foundation can be established, for example, for granting scholarships to a concrete target group and can be named after the individual.
A public benefit activity is an activity is implemented to improve the mental and physical welfare of society or its separate individuals or groups that are in worse positions.
A public benefit organisation is a non-profit organisation, whose main goals are the implementation of socially important goals, providing public benefit services and activities, covering not only members of their own organisations and their interests, but also those of others.
Sponsorship is a mutually beneficial deal between the organisation that receives the funding and the company that provides support to the respective organisation from the budget of marketing or advertising expenses. By providing sponsorship, the company receives promotional or other types of benefits.
A testamentary donation is a donation included in an individual’s will to some specific charitable goal or organisation.
A donation can be items or financial funds, which a person gives without reward and on the basis of an agreement to a public benefit organisation achieve the purposes specified in the Articles of Association of the organisation, without reciprocal duty to perform activities that are to be consideration rewardable activities.
