Everyone wants to be happy. For many, that means a good job, career progression, a loving husband or wife and children. But in Latvia, there are many thousands of families whose idea of happiness would be for their child to recover from a serious or malignant disease.
True love and immeasurable patience is required by parents whose daily lives are a struggle on behalf of their children. This struggle is emotionally and physically draining. It’s not an easy situation from an emotional perspective, nor is it easy in terms of social welfare. It is so hard to accept that your child will never be healthy and won’t be able to fulfil his or her dreams for a full life. In situations like these, you must rearrange your life, work, and relationships, and you must accept that your life will be changed forever, irrespective of your own dreams and wishes.
Feelings of guilt, helplessness and misfortune can take over if the parents aren’t able to give their children all that they need to save them or to improve their situation even a little bit. Adapting the home to make it possible for the child to move around safely is of great practical help - what a difference it would make, for example, if a mother doesn’t need to carry her twelve-year-old down flights of stairs because a chair lift has been installed. Imagine how much easier life is for a family if therapy enables a child to feed himself, rather than needing to be fed.
These families depend on our help and we must make them feel that these children and their parents are needed in Latvia. Only we can create a society with a soul, where a family with a child with special needs feels that they belong, that they are important, and that they are worthy of love and attention. Families with disabled children also require practical help to relieve their daily lives.
